Teaching More than Osteopathy

Along with clinical sciences, osteopathy skills and business management principles, I also want my students to be well versed in life improvement skills.

I spent a good portion of my lectures on self improvement topics.

Your thoughts make your reality. Improving your brain improves your thoughts and brings you closer to achieving your goals.

It takes five minutes a day of meditation to improve your brain, decrease

Nature is the key to creativity. And creativity is a key to success.

Osteopathy Business Tip #14

Create a niche market in your osteopathic practice.

Be known as an specialist in one clinical area, such as TMJ, arthritis, disk, sports, pediatric, geriatric, ergonomics, disability evaluation, foot, tennis elbow, work injuries, MVA, & so on and then let the public know by publicizing your specialty.

NUMSS Joining Osteopathy Outreach Clinic in Havana, Cuba

NUMSS is Set to Join the Osteopathy Outreach Clinic in Cuba

National University of Medical Sciences (NUMSS) received approved to participate in the osteopathy outreach program of Havana, Cuba, that was established in 2012 by the National Academy of Osteopathy.

Two NUMSS graduates of the DO program and 2 graduates of the BSc (osteopathy) are permitted to provide a month long free osteopathic treatments to Cubans in a polyclinic setting. This introduces the Cuban population to osteopathy while also providing an excellent training to new graduates.

Cuba has cultivated a large and resourceful network of health practitioners, which is made possible thanks to the well-designed academic practices and the constant commitment of its top six medical universities to the improvement of healthcare professionals. The healthcare system in Cuba is made up of 60 different specialties. Fifty one of these specialities are medical (including physiotherapy & natural medicine), with five dental, three nursing and one for psychology. There are no private healthcare facilities in Cuba and all healthcare professionals are employees of the government.

Osteopathy Business Tip #13

Majority of self employed people I know are really technicians & managers who registered a business, not true entrepreneurs.

Three people run a business, a technician, a manager and the entrepreneur. The technician does the actual day to day work of the business, the manager runs the business and the main duty of the entrepreneur is to come up with ideas on how to expand the business.

If you are managing your business, or doing the technical work, then you are not a true self employed businessperson.

Learn to delegate. Your brain should focus on how to expand your business, not on running it. Your business has to work for you not the other way around.

When your work becomes more important that your family or your health, you are not delegating enough!

Osteopathy Business Tip #12

People generally connect their results to the amount of time they spend achieving them. The more time they spend, the greater the result they think. They assume the relationship between time and result is a linear one. By changing this perspective & looking at it as an exponential relationship, you are introduced to a world of new possibilities where you can get great results in no time at all.

Osteopathy Business Tip #11

My personal interpretation of the foundation of osteopathic philosophy is that structure governs function. Manipulate the structure & you will change function. This in my opinion is the main component of osteopathy and how osteopathy is found to be so effective in treating disorders of mechanical origin such as posterior facet syndrome, the most common cause of low back pain.

I have learned that everyone wants to reach the top to find happiness, without knowing that the real happiness is in every moment of the journey in reaching the peak.

Osteopathy Business Tip #8

Videotape your conversations. During playback, watch your posture and face & listen to the tone of your voice. Do you look honest or trustworthy? Do you look happy? Does your voice sound confident?

Would you use your own services? Your physiology, posture & tone of voice have great impact on your success.

Osteopathy Business Tip #7

Being skilled in the clinical part of your practice will not necessarily increase your income. Being highly committed to increasing your income, learning the laws of finance, business, marketing & public relations, dreaming big, and taking action are the things that help you increase your clinical income.

Osteopathy Business Tip #6

As your time becomes more valuable you should spend it more on activities that generate income. At least do three to five things a day that brings you closer to your goals with the potential of increasing your income. Outsource non-income generating tasks to others even if you have to pay them.

Whatever activities you engage during work, analyze them, and ask yourself, is this activity bringing me more new patients? Adding to my income? Or is it just done to make me look busy? Doing work for the sake of being busy is no work at all. It is a waste of time, and potential income.

Osteopathy Business Tip #5

How confident you are is directly related to how successful you become in your practice. Your personal physiology affects your confidence and your credibility in front of your patients. Your posture tells patients if you are confident or burdened. Stand tall, sit straight and look the patient into the eye when speaking. Act confident and soon it will become reality.

Osteopathy Business Tip #4

It is more productive to show patients what you mean than to be limited by words alone. Patients think visually and in pictures, and a picture can say a 1000 words. Always have posters of the most important services you provide in the waiting room as well as other rooms. Do NOT use generic medical or health posters that have nothing to do with your main services.
