I love you all

2014 is almost finished. It is 4AM and while meditating I reflect on the journey that has taken me here. Within the past 4 years I registered two schools that went on to become the largest providers of manual osteopathic education in the world.

We could not have achieved this success without you, my students. It is you who are the main reason for our success.

I thank you for choosing us for your education. I love you all.

E + P = O

Events (E) occur in your life many times without your control. However the outcome (O) and what it does to you is based on your perception (P) of them. Positive osteopaths deal better with negative events in their lives and as a result lead happier lives. They also attract more patients and as a result enjoy higher income.

A way to increase your positivity is to do what I call “The Happiness Walk” on a daily basis. Walk for a few minutes outside your home and give thanks to 10 things you are grateful for. Think and really understand how blessed you are and be thankful for that. Find the joy and happiness in your life, and give thanks for them during this walk.

By focusing on joy & happiness on a daily basis, you increase your positivity. Remember what you focus on grows.

To learn more about how to improve your business, enrol at the Master of Business Management  (MBA) in Healthcare offered by NUMSS. The program has tons of practical tips you can use right away to improve your practice.

Osteopathy Business Tip # 91

Read Regularly About Successful People

I always recommend to my students at National Academy of Osteopathy & the National University of Medical Sciences to read about successful people. Their life stories can teach us all many valuable lessons.

I love the life story of Bruce Lee, the greatest martial artists of the world and the father of mixed martial arts. It is a rags to riches story. He came to USA with $100 in his pocket and soon became the biggest martial arts movie star in the world, at a time when the whole society was prejudiced against Asian actors.

Here are some of the business lessons from Bruce Lee that all osteopaths can follow:

1-      Dream big: Bruce Lee’s dream was to become the biggest Chinese movie star. You must have a dream big enough that motivates you to get up early, go to bed late and be excited about making it a reality.

2-      Set big goals: Bruce Lee’s goal was to make $10,000,000 per year in his acting career. Your goal must be specific enough and you should do at least three things every day to bring you closer to your goal. General goals such as “I want to be happy” are not specific enough for your subconscious to work on and to bring you relevant information through your reticular activating system.

3-      Have self confidence. Bruce Lee believed himself to be the best martial artist in the world and was not afraid to say that out loud. Some consider that arrogance but if you do not believe in yourself, no one else will. The amount of income an osteopath makes is greatly related to his/her self confidence, not the clinical skills as widely believed. By increasing your self confident you increase your income.

4-      Be creative. When he could not get into Hollywood directly, he went back to Hong Kong, became a movie star there and made Hollywood come to him. Creativity is a big source of success. A simple walk in nature increases your creativity.

5-      Go against status quo and break tradition. Bruce Lee is the father of mixed martial arts because he did not believe in any one martial arts style. He took the effective techniques of each style. Go against what is “normal” in society and what you are “expected” to do. By being unique and innovative you make your own system.

6-      Market & brand yourself. Bruce Lee constantly showcased his techniques and skills through all sort of media, newspapers, TV, live demonstration and so on. If people do not see you regularly they forget about you. Be visible, show what you can do, speak about yourself, showcase your skills.

7-      Take risk. Bruce Lee fought with the biggest Chinese Kung Fu martial artists brought against him & beat him in three minutes to get the right to teach Chinese martial arts. He risked losing his reputation & credibility but the risk paid off greatly for him. In your practice, if you do not risk something you will not gain anything.

8-      Aim higher. Bruce Lee was never satisfied. After he beat the Kung Fu champion in 3 minutes, instead of celebrating he went for meditation and contemplated why it took him 3 minutes to submit the opponent. He worked continuously to improve himself. You should always aim to achieve more success. Continuous improvement brings about continuous success.

9-      Money not needed. Bruce Lee made one of his most successful movies with just $18,000. The movie made over $90,000,000. You do not need money to achieve success.

10-   Give people what they want. Bruce Lee understood this greatly. His movies excited fans and they were the reason behind his success. Give your patients the best osteopathic care and they become your best fans. The world of mouth referral is a big cause of success for osteopaths.

VIDEO: How to Choose The Right Osteopathy School

Here is a video on how to choose the right osteopathy school.

How to Choose the Right Osteopathy School

How to Choose the Right Osteopathy School

1-      Tuition. Accredited European style osteopathy schools (ie manual osteopathy) range in tuition from $5000 to over $100,000. Choose a school that offers affordable tuition.

2-      Location. Is there a school in your town? If not, consider a school that offers online osteopathic education.

3-      Size. Choose a large popular school. Larger schools have more budget which allows them to hire better instructors.

4-      Business. Choose a school that offers business, marketing, financial, accounting and management skills. You need these to become a successful manual osteopath.

5-      Techniques. Choose a school that teaches more practical techniques and focuses less on theoretical aspects of osteopathy.

6-      Affection. How much does the school love osteopathy? What have they done for the profession? What are they doing to elevate the profession?

7-      Professors. Who are the professors? Are they well known manual osteopaths? Are they successful?

8-      Success. How successful is the school? A successful school can make you a successful osteopath. If the school cannot achieve success for itself, how can it teach you to become a successful osteopath?

9-      Science. Does the school teach scientific principles & techniques? Some schools teach outdated osteopathic principles that have no benefit in the current health system.

10-    Regulation. What has the school done to help manual osteopathy become regulated?

11-   Accreditation. Are they accredited by the Council on Manual Osteopathy Education and other accreditation agencies?

12-   Promotion. Is the school actively promoting osteopathy? What type of promotion do they to celebrate World Osteopathy Day?

13-   WHO. Does the school offer osteopathic education that is World Health Organization compliant?

14-   Continuing Education. Does the school offer continuing education seminars to upgrade your skills after graduation?

15-   Auxiliary skills. Aside from osteopathy, what other clinical skills the school teaches that can be useful in your practice? Does the school teach orthotic casting, physiotherapy modalities, kinesiological taping, orthopedic bracing, supports hose dispensing & decompression traction therapy?

16-   Support. Does the school support you after graduation? Are you able to ask questions and seek help if you need after graduation?

17-   Scholarships. Does the school offer scholarships? Do they have bursaries available for unemployed?

18-   Reputation. Is the school well known? Is the founder well known?

19-   Popularity. How popular is the school? How many members they have in their Facebook page and group? How many people read their blogs?

20-   Charity. What has the school done for charity? Have they set up any charity based clinics? Do they donate regularly to charity?

21-   Work schedule. Are you a working professional? If yes, you need to choose a school that offers part time education or online education so you can study at your free time.

22-   Malpractice insurance. Is the school accepted by malpractice insurance providers? Can you get malpractice insurance after graduation?

23-   Clinic set up. Does the school teach you what type of clinic to choose and how to set it up?

24-   Program length. There are schools offering 6 months diploma programs in osteopathy and then there are schools offering 4 years degree programs. All allow you to work as manual osteopaths, however some teach medical diagnosis & radiology and others don’t. Choose a school that offers you the type of education you need or want.

25-   IOA. Is the school accepted by International Osteopathic Association, the largest organization for manual osteopaths?
